Craft On: Patriotic Cookies

DIY Video Patriotic Cookies

Firework Cookie

As promised, here is one more Craft On episode for you today - this time for some fun patriotic cookies (that you can put on your new patriotic cake plate!).  Before you watch the video, let me preface it by saying that I really don't like being rushed while baking or decorating baked goods (who does!).  However, when brainstorming holiday ideas I became a bit overzealous and decided I would show 3 different patriotic cookie decorating processes in one video.  I was super rushed for time while filming, so you don't get to see any pretty, perfectly-styled cookies in this video, but you do get to see how quick you can bust out these cookies.  Click the play button to watch the video and continue on for the directions, photos, and some additional tips.  Thanks for watching!Materials Needed:

  • Sugar cookie dough

  • Decorating icing: Red, White & Blue

  • Star cookie cutter

  • Spatula

  • Sprinkles

  • Toothpicks

Patriotic Cookies Part 1

Directions:Step #1: Roll out dough and place on an ungreased baking sheet.Step #2: Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.Step #3: Let sit for 2-3 minutes then place the cutters into each cookie to cut the shape. Allow cookies to cool completely before moving from baking sheet.Step #4: Once cooled, place on a clean plate before moving on to the decorating process. Now it's on to the decorating!  And again, if this episode makes you feel on your toes, you can imagine how I felt filming it - I was very rushed getting all 3 processes in, so perfecting the cookies was not in the cards this day.  I used a store-bought decorating icing due to the lack of time with the filming schedule.  If you have the time, I'd recommend making your own royal icing as the consistency will be much easier for you to work with while decorating.Because this video moves really fast, here are the decorating bullet points and a few photos for reference.Decorating Steps:For the Sprinkle Cookie:

  • Cover base of cookie with icing

  • Smooth icing over edge of cookie

  • Add on red, white, and blue sprinkles

For the Firework Cookie:

  • First create an outline for your icing, then fill in the outline (“flood”) with royal icing

  • Using a different color of icing, add a dot and/or ring of icing atop your first layer
