DIY: Paper Flower Crown

diy paper flower crown In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo and Mexican-inspired traditions, I thought I'd post a DIY for a flower crown. And while I have seen a lot of beautiful flower crown DIYs, I'm not too familiar with a paper flower crown tutorial, so I decided to go for it! These flower crowns would be so fun to make for a Cinco de Mayo party - and paper is of course a much cheaper alternative to the silk flowers commonly used for these crowns. paper flower crownpaper flower crownpaper floral crownfloral crown click hereMaterials Needed:

  • Floral Wire
  • Assortment of bright colored paper (Note: You'll need (1) 8.5 x 11" piece of paper per flower)
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Floral Tape

Step 1 - The Crown: Take your floral wire and shape it into a circle that fits comfortably on your head. Once you have your initial wire crown, go ahead and double or triple it up with the wire to make it a bit sturdier. Note: Once the flowers have been added it will make it a bit tighter, so be sure to leave some room with the initial wire crown.Step 2 - The Flowers: Now, make your flowers - attaching each flower to an individual piece of wire. Follow the photo steps below to create small or large flowers.papercrowndiyfloralrose1. cut 7-10 individual petals and a piece of wire // 2. wrap your first petal around the end of your wire, using hot glue to create your base  // 3. curl the edges of your petals // 4. add your petals individually atop your base, using hot glue // 5. if attempting a small flower, you're done. if attempting a larger flower, continue // 6. following the template below, cut one flower with 4 petals (note the dotted line in the template) and one with 5 petals // 7. close the flowers, securing the flap to the adjacent petals with glue to close. curl the petals back using your fingers. // 8. string the flowers through your wire and up the stem, then apply hot glue to your base and in between the templates (one at a time), pushing each template up towards your base to adhere. lastly, fix any flower petals that need additional curling or trimming.petalsStep 3 - Assembling the Crown: Begin arranging your flowers on the wire crown, making sure to decide the positioning of the flowers prior to securing them.  Once you're feeling good about the placement, go ahead and wrap each wire strand around the crown, starting from the back and working towards the center/front of the crown.

Step 4 - Finishing Touches: This is where the optional floral tape comes into play. If you're making this for a younger child or just don't trust yourself with potential loose (and sharp) wires, go ahead and wrap the remaining crown with floral wire.  I was really digging the look of the gold wire, so I decided to keep mine uncovered, but this part is totally up to you. Since I wanted to keep my wire exposed, I made sure to secure my wire very tightly around the crown to avoid any loose wires.floralcrown
